About ACT

The ACT is used for admission to colleges, mainly in the United States. On national test dates it is given on paper or on a computer. The core test is English, mathematics and reading. Science is an optional add-on, given after reading, and writing is an optional essay, given after the multiple-choice sections.

English is 50 questions in 35 minutes, mathematics 45 questions in 50 minutes, and reading 36 questions in 40 minutes: 131 questions in 2 hours 5 minutes, plus a break of about 10 to 15 minutes between mathematics and reading. Science, if taken, adds 40 questions in 40 minutes. Writing, if taken, is one essay in 40 minutes. Every multiple-choice question has four answers.

Some items in each multiple-choice section are embedded field-test items and do not count. They are not labelled. English has 40 scored items, mathematics 41, reading 27 and science 34.

Each multiple-choice section is reported from 1 to 36. The Composite is the average of the English, mathematics and reading scale scores, rounded to the nearest whole number (a fraction of one half or more rounds up). Science is not part of the Composite. There is no penalty for a wrong answer and no pass mark.
